Job Summary
This role is responsible for working independently to provide training support for Transmission Operations (TOps) which includes developing training materials/courses, presenting course materials locally, remotely and/or via web conferencing, facilitating emergency operations drills and RC-related training, creating training scenarios for the Dispatcher Training Simulator (DTS) and/or Power Simulator. The trainer is also responsible in the administration of progression test, course evaluations, material/course updates, systematic approach to training and NERC compliance activities. The Trainer must be able to work independently to research and develop training based on the outcome of the systematic approach to training. The trainer is familiar with the relevant Reliability Coordinator and NERC Regional procedures and protocols that are applicable to PJM, SPP and ERCOT. The trainer's skills include relevant knowledge of State Estimation, SCADA, DOL, iTOA, QTS and KEY.
Job Description
What You'll Do:
- Assist in the development and delivery of technical skills training in support of control area and dispatching activities and in support of operations engineering practices.
- Work to improve service to our customers through Human Performance Training and workforce development.
- Provide information, documentation and procedures for dispatching, real-time operations, operations engineering and support functions which includes technical data support for Transmission Operations.
- Assist in the maintenance of the training/qualification databases (KEY/QTS) for all Transmission Operations personnel to allow for the tracking of training received and to provide for training records documentation in accordance with NERC and other compliance requirements.
- Develop relationships with other AEP training organizations/individuals and external training consultants to develop cost effective training solutions.
- Develop and implement training using lessons learned (switching errors, mitigations, etc.) as well as training materials and/or courses based on the systematic approach to training.
- Research, design and develop training programs and materials for the initial, continuing, and emergency preparedness training for NERC certified Dispatchers and System Operators.
- Provide training via classroom, simulation, simulator, self-study and e-learning curricula, On-the-Job Training and vendor provided training.
- Provide feedback to develop Transmission Operation's annual Training Plan.
What We're Looking For: Education and Experience: - Two-Year degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering and five (5) years of experience in electric utility system operations, including two (2) years as a Transmission System Operator or Dispatcher or three (3) years as a TOps Training Specialist.
- High School Diploma and six (6) years of experience in electric utility system operations, including two (2) years as a Transmission System Operator or Dispatcher or three (3) years as a TOps Training Specialist.
Licenses/Certifications: - Must possess a NERC Certified System Operator certificate at the Transmission Operator, Balancing/Interchange/Transmission Operator or Reliability Operator levels or NERC certification in 18-months.
- Valid state driver's license.
Other Requirements: - Attend internal/external training and/or meetings to enhance trainer's skills and knowledge.
- Familiarity and/or experience with NERC training requirements.
- Working knowledge of NERC Standards and Operating policies, including HPI, and switching and tagging principles.
- Strong communication skills both oral and written. Including past experience in making presentations to small and large groups.
- Demonstrated ability to work within a team structure.
- Experience using Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
- Certification as a trainer/instructor or training/instructional designer is preferred.
- Travel is required.

Compensation Data Compensation Grade: SP20-008
Compensation Range: $98,993.00 - $128,688.00
The Physical Demand Level for this job is: M - Medium Work: Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
