Job Title: Accountant

Department: Finance

Reports to: Controller

Position Supervised: N/A

Employment Class: Full-Time Exempt

Workdays: M-F

Customary Hours: 8:30am - 5pm (*Hours are extended when workload is increased.)

Position Summary

The Accountant plays a critical role in supporting the financial health, transparency, and accountability of the organization. This position is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, ensuring compliance with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting standards, managing grant reporting, and supporting the annual audit process. The Accountant works collaboratively across departments to provide accounting support to programs, organization period end closes, cash reporting and forecasting, payables & receivables management, and other general accounting activities as required.

Duties & Responsibilities

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare, review, and maintain accurate general ledger entries and account reconciliations.
  • Produce monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP and not-for-profit accounting standards (ASC 958).
  • Monitor revenue and expense activity to ensure accuracy and proper classification.
  • Prepare internal financial reports for leadership, board committees, and program teams.
Grant & Restricted Funds Accounting
  • Track and reconcile grants, contracts, and restricted contributions.
  • Prepare grant invoices, drawdowns, and financial reports in accordance with funder requirements.
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition and release of restricted funds.
  • Support program staff in understanding grant budgets and expenditure guidelines.
Payroll
  • Support monthly payroll processing as needed.
  • Work closely with Human Resources on coordinating issues impacting payroll processing.
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Assist in the development of the annual organizational budget.
  • Support department managers in preparing and monitoring program budgets.
  • Conduct financial analysis, variance analysis, and revenue/expenditure forecasting.
Audit, Compliance & Controls
  • Support annual financial audit and any program-specific audits.
  • Maintain documentation and schedules for auditors; implement audit recommendations.
  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations, as well as organizational policies.
  • Strengthen internal controls and accounting procedures.
Accounts Payable & Receivable Oversight
  • Review and approve AP/AR transactions for accuracy and proper coding.
  • Support payroll processing and related journal entries (if applicable).
  • Monitor cash flow, banking activity, and investment accounts.
Systems & Process Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to streamline processes and improve efficiency.
  • Train staff on financial policies, procedures, and systems.

Experience and Skills
Education and Experience:

Education:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required.
  • CPA designation is preferred.
Experience:

Required:
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in a not-for-profit environment.
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, fund accounting, and grant reporting.
  • Experience with General Accounting, Payroll, Cash reporting and other accounting functions.
  • Familiarity with accounting software (e.g., AccuFund, Blackbaud, others).
  • Proficiency in Excel and financial analysis.
  • Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle confidential information with integrity.
Preferred:
  • Experience with government grants (e.g., federal, state, municipal).
  • Knowledge of donor management systems (e.g., Raiser's Edge, Salesforce).

  • Experience with videoconferencing systems (e.g., Webex, Zoom, Teams, etc.)
  • Experience in budgeting tools and financial dashboarding.
Time Management and Organization:
  • Ensures accuracy, efficiency, and consistency across all tasks
  • Works independently with the ability to handle multiple tasks
  • Manages workload effectively and delivers results in a timely manner
Work Environment:
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and see.
  • The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to low.
  • The employee is required to occasionally travel to different work sites and community events as needed.
  • Professional business attire and appearance required.
