Role: Functional and Process Safety Engineer to strengthen our team and support safe operations across high-hazard facilities (e.g., oil & gas, chemicals, energy, or manufacturing). The role will focus on ensuring that functional safety systems and process safety practices are applied effectively, with particular emphasis on safety instrumented functions.
Main Responsibilities:
• Support the safe design, operation, and modification of plant systems by applying functional and process safety principles.
• Conduct and support safety assessments, including SIL determination/verification, HAZOPs, LOPAs, and other structured risk assessments.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of safety requirements specifications and proof test procedures.
• Provide input into hazard identification, risk analysis, and mitigation strategies to ensure risks are reduced to ALARP.
• Support the management of functional safety lifecycle activities in line with IEC 61508/61511 and company standards.
• Assist in the classification of hazardous areas and support compliance with ATEX/DSEAR requirements.
• Participate in fire, gas, blast, and dispersion modelling assessments in collaboration with specialist teams.
• Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring alignment with HSE requirements and continuous improvement of safety practices.
• Stay updated on industry developments and best practices related to functional safety engineering and participate in relevant training and professional development activities.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organization to promote a culture of safety and continuous improvement.
Position Requirements:
• Bachelor's degree in engineering (Master's degree preferred) in Chemical Engineering, Process Engineering, Control/Automation Engineering, or a related discipline.
• Proven experience (typically 5+ years) in process engineering within oil & gas, petrochemical, energy, or similar industries.
• Demonstrated experience in functional safety (IEC 61508/61511, SIL determination/verification, FSM).
• Solid understanding of process safety management (HAZID, HAZOP, LOPA, QRA, OBRA, pressure relief, etc.).
• Certification in functional and process safety (preferred but not necessary). • Knowledge of ATEX/DSEAR compliance and hazardous area classification. • Awareness of cybersecurity aspects of safety instrumented systems is desirable. • Strong analytical skills, problem-solving mindset, and ability to communicate safety concepts clearly.
Desirable:
• Candidates with engineering consulting background and experience, plus the ability to run a new consulting business in the USA.
• Exposure to energy operators in the US market or strong relationship with EPCs.
• Experience and certifications in Functional Safety and Process Safety could be a further advantage.
