Job Summary

The Retail Operations Leader plays a shared responsibility in driving operational excellence within our stores, aligning with PetSmart's vision, mission, values, and strategies. This role encompasses merchandising, inventory management, pet care operations, opening and/or closing the store, leading associates, financial performance, and ensuring a safe and organized environment.

Essential Responsibilities

Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

People Leadership:

  • Engage in employment activities like recruiting, interviewing, and coaching.
  • Facilitate a positive associate experience and support development through training, onboarding, performance reviews, management of labor, and accountability coaching.
  • Address associate complaints and grievances effectively.
  • Delegate and confirm daily tasks to meet business goals and pet parent needs.
  • Coach associates on operational best practices to ensure the health and safety of pets.
  • Coordinate staffing for key operational areas within the store.
  • Ensure completion of all operational messages and training compliance.
  • Communicate company updates and priorities clearly to maintain alignment and meet expectations.
  • Recognize and celebrate associate achievements to boost engagement.

Overall Store Experience:

  • Oversee the care of store-owned pets, ensuring proper maintenance and compliance with care standards.
  • Manage inventory accuracy and pricing processes, ensuring timely execution of inventory tasks and product presentations.
  • Continuously evaluate operations to improve customer experiences and service efficiency.
  • Maintain vendor relations and uphold backroom standards.
  • Supervise processes related to online orders and store operations.
  • Analyze sales trends and make informed merchandising decisions.
  • Maintain store standards and lead a culture of compliance and ethics.
  • Ensure a safe environment for associates, pets, and pet parents.
  • Take prompt action on any health or safety issues involving pets.
  • Assist with store opening and closing activities and handle customer concerns professionally.

Expense Management:

  • Drive business growth while meeting store P&L targets, managing sales and loss prevention goals.
  • Analyze inventory reports to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Manage expenses related to labor, supplies, and other key metrics.
  • Collaborate with Home Office partners for store-related needs.

Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of leadership experience in retail or customer-focused settings.
  • Full-time availability required; flexibility to work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Proficient in computer applications.
  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure and maintain composure.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.

Supervisory Responsibility:

  • Typically oversees up to three lead associates and forty non-leader associates while adhering to PetSmart's policies.
  • Responsible for critical employment and development decisions.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Must be able to stand, walk, climb ladders, and handle various physical tasks.
  • Frequent lifting and movement of up to 50 pounds and occasionally more.
  • Exposure to a moderate noise level, high levels at times, and handling live animals.
