Equipment Technician

The Equipment Technician will provide advanced technical support for semiconductor process equipment within the Ohio State Institute for Materials and Manufacturing's Nanotech West Laboratory, a nanofabrication user facility, and the Semiconductor Epitaxy and Analysis Laboratory, a materials innovation laboratory within the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. This role has primary focus in the areas of semiconductor process equipment maintenance and safety. The equipment technician will perform scheduled preventative maintenance procedures on equipment according to established timelines and standard procedures. The technician will utilize their broad knowledge and operational experience with root cause analysis to quickly diagnose problems with semiconductor equipment or vacuum systems. They will run processes on the tool including wafer loading, handling, cleaning and will occasionally run basic characterization as required to understand tool performance. The technician will be able to work with equipment vendors to find solutions to hardware failures and malfunctions when the root cause is unknown. They will create and document effective solutions to repair root cause failures and prevent future recurrence. The technician will perform mechanical and electrical troubleshooting for supporting systems, including gas management systems, vacuum systems, thermal management systems, and optical sensors. The ideal candidate is someone who enjoys a hands-on learning environment.

Strong documentation skills are an essential for a successful candidate in this role. The technician must be capable of keeping and communicating daily records of troubleshooting efforts, maintenance activity, and process parameters with the research scientist. The technician must be comfortable working in a collaborative environment, including documenting and sharing insights gained during performance of role responsibilities, to drive continuous improvement of equipment maintenance processes and procedures.

Required Education and Experience:

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Two years of experience working in a mechanical technical environment, or as an equipment technician in an engineering related field (preferably mechanical, electrical or industrial), or as a technician in a laboratory environment.
  • Possess a strong personal focus on safety for themselves and those around them. Able to maintain a safe work environment.
  • Ability to work with hazardous chemicals and gases.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and thrives in team-oriented environments where cross-functional cooperation.

Desired Education and Experience:

  • Associate degree or higher in a technology related field.
  • 4-6 years experience with maintenance, troubleshooting, and helium-based leak testing of ultra-high vacuum systems.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repair of simple electronics.
  • Familiarity with SPC systems, and their utilization in maintaining equipment uptime, and process health.
  • Experience with computer logging systems specifically in the context of a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
  • Experience supporting researchers in a laboratory environment.

The hourly pay range for this job profile is $22.93-$29.95. The pay rate offer for this position will fall within this range based on the candidate's qualifications, internal equity, and the unit's available budget.
