As a Senior Underwriter, you will be responsible for delivering a profitable underwriting service to your clients. Your key tasks include underwriting within the agreed business plan and authority; supporting the business planning and forecasting process; monitoring financial exposure and premium income within limits; maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting inputs on settlement; ensuring adequate reinsurance; building and maintaining relationships with brokers and clients; and supporting the design and structure of risks.

What you'll be doing

What will your essential responsibilities include?

  • Reviewing submissions including specifications, policy wording, inspection reports, loss runs, and financial reports while researching to determine degree of risk for each account.
  • Calculating appropriate risk premium by considering risk costs, sector factors, loss experience, reinsurance cessions, and underwriting/administration costs to ensure profitability.
  • Advising, assisting, servicing and following up with clients on insurance and risk management matters to ensure satisfaction of requirements.
  • Effectively managing relationships to initiate cross-selling opportunities and ensure account retention.
  • Ensuring timely implementation of new and renewed accounts according to quality standards.
  • Coordinating with internal teams to determine appropriate reinsurance for risk placements on an excess of loss basis.
  • Reviewing loss control reports and managing policy endorsement requests to process necessary changes.
  • Maintaining awareness of all claims advised while supporting and providing input on settlement of claims.
  • Working collaboratively in a team environment, assisting underwriters, underwriting assistants and management.
  • Working with other business units on cross-sell opportunities.

You will report to the Underwriting Manager.

What you'll bring

Required Skills And Abilities

  • Bachelor's Degree (or equivalent)
  • Some experience in Marine Insurance.

  • Under technical direction, works within significant limits on higher technical complexity and coordination.
  • Demonstrated technical knowledge and skills, including product and industry, reflective of progression through job levels.
  • Advanced analytical, negotiation and sales/marketing skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Interpersonal Savvy — ability to build and maintain insured and broker contacts.
  • Ability to develop and understand business processes, strategy and planning.
  • Collaborative team player who provides creative solutions for resolution.
