With major offices in Herndon, Denver, and Amsterdam, they have a global footprint and a unified team of employees committed to providing premier customer experience and delivering the full spectrum of data center solutions, from core to edge, like no other data center provider can do.

The Data Center Operations Technical Writer will support the local Global Maintenance and Operations team on multiple daily (technical) duties in the datacenter and office.

Primary Responsibilities

The Data Center Operations Technical Writer is a documentation specialist responsible for creating and managing all operational documentation for our global data center facilities. This role serves as part of the operations support team reporting to Critical Systems, focusing on developing clear, accurate manuals and procedures that guide data center staff in day-to-day and emergency operations. The Technical Writer will ensure that Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Methods of Procedure (MOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and other critical documents are up-to-date, consistent, and easily understood by both technical and non-technical audiences. Working closely with engineering, maintenance, and operations teams around the world, this individual will uphold documentation standards, implement version control and document editing practices, and serve as the point of contact for documentation governance. The ideal candidate has exceptional writing skills, a strong understanding of data center systems, meticulous attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate across departments and global regions.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Technical Writing Expertise: Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to produce clear, concise, and well-structured documentation. Talent for translating complex technical processes into easily understandable text and visuals. Keen attention to detail to catch inconsistencies or errors in technical content.

Data Center Operations Knowledge: Basic understanding of data center systems and operations, including familiarity with electrical and cooling infrastructure and maintenance processes. Technical knowledge of data center operations enables the writer to contextually capture procedures and anticipate what level of detail end-users need.

Tool Proficiency: High proficiency in Microsoft Office 365 (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for document creation and formatting. Experienced in using SharePoint or similar content management systems for organizing documentation libraries and controlling document access.

Document Management & Version Control: Solid grasp of document control principles – including versioning, change management, and approval workflows. Ability to help manage a document repository, setting appropriate editing rights and ensuring users always retrieve the current approved version.

CMMS and Workflow Integration: Familiarity with Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and their role in operations. Understand how maintenance work orders and procedures are tracked so that documentation (e.g. maintenance instructions or checklists) can be aligned with those systems. Ability to liaise with maintenance teams to ensure procedural documents complement the CMMS workflow for preventive and corrective maintenance.

Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to quickly learn new technical concepts or tools and incorporate them into documentation. Critical thinking skills to analyze how a process can be documented more effectively or how a procedure might be simplified. Comfortable dealing with evolving environments – can handle change and ambiguity while still delivering accurate documentation.

Organization and Project Management: Superior organizational skills with the capacity to manage multiple documentation projects and deadlines simultaneously. Uses project management best practices to track document development lifecycle (drafting, review, approval, publication). Ensures timely completion of documentation updates in line with project or maintenance schedules.

Interpersonal & Communication Skills: Excellent communication and teamwork abilities. Capable of interviewing and working collaboratively with global and cross-functional teams to gather information. Strong listening skills to accurately capture expert input, and confident verbal communication to present and clarify documentation content. Able to hold meetings or training sessions on documentation topics when required.

Quality and Compliance Orientation: A strong focus on quality assurance, ensuring all writing meets high standards for accuracy and consistency. Diligence in following compliance guidelines and encouraging a culture of adherence to documented procedures. Able to perform detail-oriented checks and support audits or compliance reviews related to operational documentation.

Continuous Improvement Mindset: Willingness to continuously improve personal knowledge and the documentation processes. Stay updated on industry's best practices in technical writing and documentation management, and proactively recommend enhancements (such as new tools, templates, or standards) to keep the documentation program state-of-the-art.

Experience/Education

Education: Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Technical Communication, English, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related field in Data Center Operations required. An advanced degree or certifications in technical writing or information management is a plus. (In lieu of a technical degree, demonstrated experience in a highly technical writing role may be considered.)

Experience: 5+ years of experience in technical writing, preferably with a knowledge of data center operations or engineering or another industrial/operations environment. Candidates with background documenting operational procedures, understanding maintenance guidelines, or safety protocols in critical environments (data centers, manufacturing plants, oil & gas facilities, etc.) preferred.

Domain Expertise: Prior experience working within a global or multi-site organization is beneficial, as this role interfaces with regional teams across different countries. Understanding international considerations for documentation (such as regional compliance standards or localization needs) is a bonus.

Technical Tools and Systems: Hands-on experience with document management systems (such as SharePoint) and any Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) used in facility operations. Experience using collaboration tools and version control (for example, familiarity with platforms like Git or document versioning features in SharePoint/Confluence) is advantageous.

Process Improvement: Experience or training in process improvement methodologies (e.g. Six Sigma, Lean) is desirable, as it indicates an ability to streamline workflows and improve how documentation supports operational excellence.

Other:

Process-related and cross-functional collaboration skills are essential. Proactive communication and training capabilities are valued.

  • Communication: Proved ability to work in cross-functional teams and communicate effectively at all global organizational levels. A track record of delivering presentations or training on technical content is a plus.
