Data Center Chief Engineer – Night Shift
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is looking for a Chief Engineer to join our Data Center Engineering Operations team. The role is night‑shift, typically between 6 pm and 6 am, four days a week. You will be the primary escalation point for all facilities‑related issues and the lead on maintaining critical infrastructure systems in AWS's most sophisticated data centers.
Overview
As a Data Center Chief Engineer, you will help ensure that AWS's data centers continue to operate reliably and safely at the highest levels of uptime. You will work closely with front‑line responders, IT managers and external vendors to troubleshoot, maintain and upgrade electrical and mechanical equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Act as the primary escalation point for all facilities‑related issues.
- Oversee routine and emergency services on critical systems such as switchgear, generators, UPS units, power distribution equipment, chillers, cooling towers, and building monitoring systems.
- Perform root‑cause analysis of equipment failures and troubleshoot within internal Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
Provide training and guidance to Engineering Operations Technicians and work with the Facility Manager to set team culture. - Create and deploy new standard practices for technicians, chief engineers and vendor support teams.
- Assist in building new facilities and projects that increase current facility efficiency.
- Respond to out‑of‑hours emergency calls and work outside normal business hours for routine maintenance as required.
- Communicate complex technical information to non‑technical audiences.
- Coordinate projects with IT managers and other business leaders to manage capacity, optimize plant safety, performance, reliability and efficiency.
- Ensure all safety procedures are adhered to by vendor and Amazon staff.
- Establish building performance benchmarks, conduct analyses and prepare reports on all aspects of critical facility operations.
- Utilize Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and other basic administrative tools for day‑to‑day tasks.
Physical Requirements
- Regularly lift up to 39 pounds independently; participate in group lifts for 40+ pounds.
- Maintain balance while working on a ladder and perform construction tasks while on a ladder.
- Walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb stairs, twist, bend, grab, carry, push and pull objects into position.
- Work in an environment requiring provided ear protection.

Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of electrical or mechanical experience.
- 3+ years of data center or mission‑critical facilities experience.
- Relevant technical training or degree (e.g., electrical or mechanical).
Preferred Qualifications
- 4+ years of data center engineering experience.
- Associate's or Bachelor's degree.
- Experience leading teams.

Salary Range: $83,100 – $185,000 per year (may vary by market). Additional compensation may include equity, sign‑on bonuses and benefits. This position will remain posted until filled.
